This university is the oldest post-secondary educational institution in Western Canada. Visitors are encouraged to visit its on-site art gallery, and to view the sculpture of Louis Riel by Franco-Manitoban sculptor Marcien Lemay, located outside on the building's East side facing Aulneau Street. For many years, this sculpture sat behind Manitoba’s Legislative Building but was removed after a heated public debate over its portrayal of Riel as an emotionally tormented and troubled individual.
