Self Guided Historical Tour: BaladoDécouverte

Published on: April 20, 2018

Where: Saint-Boniface

Find the sites and institutions that have contributed to the development of the French-Canadian and Métis communities of Manitoba and western Canada and discover their history. Described in the past as the Gateway to the West, St. Boniface played an important role in the history of Manitoba and Western Canada. Its origins date back to 1818 with the arrival of Fathers Provencher and Dumoulin at Red River Colony and the first years of the Catholic mission. Through the years, religious activities increased. A community of Métis and French-Canadian residents settled around the parish, part of which became a village in 1883. Today, St. Boniface is a bilingual community located in the heart of the City of Winnipeg. This historical tour will allow you to discover through time the development of the constantly changing sites and institutions that contributed greatly to the development of Manitoba’s and Western Canada’s French-Canadian and Métis communities.
