The Riel Experience

Experience a full day of interactive activities highlighting the life of Louis Riel and Métis culture.

Learn more about Riel’s life as you visit three sites with strong links to his story: his family’s farm and home in St. Vital; his very first school where many of his belongings are now displayed; and his final resting place in St. Boniface. This adventure told through stories, objects, song and activity will provide your students with an incredible sense of place and enhance their knowledge about French-Canadian and Métis heritage. This full day field trip includes participation in three different programs that focus on Louis Riel’s life and the Métis in Manitoba.

1) Musée de Saint-Boniface Museum: A tour of the Museum’s exhibits and collections highlights the culture, heritage and contributions of the French-Canadian and Métis communities in Manitoba and beyond.

2) Theatre in the Cemetery: Follow your guide Angélique Nolin, Western Canada’s first lay school teacher, and other dynamic characters in period costume for this popular theatrical experience, as you explore the resting places of illustrious history-makers such as Louis Riel and rediscover key events of our province’s heritage.

3) Riel House National Historic Site of Canada: Follow a costumed Métis interpreter on a tour of the Riel family farm and participate in a hands-on activity that focuses on Louis Riel as a person of national historic significance and the river lots system as a unique form of prairie settlement.
